Councillor says people 'too scared' to intervene in frenzied attack on boy, 16
PEOPLE must have been too frightened to intervene in an attack at a filling station in Corbally which left a 16-year-old boy fighting for his life, according to a local councillor.
The teenager was kicked, beaten and stamped upon on the forecourt of Applegreen near Shannon Banks on Friday night.
The 24-hour filling station was busy at the time but it took four minutes before anyone intervened to save the teenager from the frenzied and unprovoked assault.
"A lot of people are disturbed by what happened at the weekend," said Westbury-based councillor, Pascal Fitzgerald.
"People are too scared to get involved to break up these fights. I think people would feel reluctant to do that."
The incident took place a week after the Clare County councillor called on senior gardai in Limerick city to consider locating a garda sub-office in Westbury or Shannon Banks.
Meanwhile, it emerged that the 17-year-old accused of assaulting the 16-year-old boy was in the care of the HSE and in the company of two female HSE care workers when the incident took place.
He appeared before a special sitting of the Children's Court on Sunday afternoon charged with assaulting a teenager causing him serious harm at the filling station on Friday night The court heard the teenager replied "I'm sorry" to the charge after caution.
He was ordered to be detained in St Patrick's Institution in Dublin and is due before the Children's Court again this week.
