Council to decide next week on hostel plan
THE developers behind plans to turn a former lapdancing club into a tourist hostel will learn next week if their application has been successful.
In March, the Limerick Leader revealed plans by Hirar Properties to turn The Globe on Cecil Street, into a €2m hostel, taking up four floors over a basement.
Eighty-five bed spaces will be made available in dormitories, with separate floors for men and women. Some rooms would have ensuite facilities, while the ground floor will incorporate a web cafe, and sandwich bar.
After the application was submitted, Limerick City Council called for more information, citing concerns over the look the hostel would have on Cecil Street.
"The subject building, whilst not being a protected structure is located within the Limerick city architectural conservation area, and as such is surrounded by numerous other features of historic archaeological significance. As such, the planning authority has concerns in relation to the proposed front elevation of the redeveloped building and considers improvements could be made to enhance the visual presence of the building and contribute positively to Cecil Street and the area in general," the Council said at the time.
Council planners also called on the developers to provide more detailed information proving the shower/beds radio met international hostelling standards.
Hirar Properties responded to the call in July.
The developers previously stated they saw a gap in the market for a tourist hostel, since the city currently had no such facility. It is expected, if the development gets the go-ahead, it would cater for student backpackers on short visits to the city, who would pay up to €20 per night.
Limerick City Council is expected to decide an outcome on the application next Monday.
