Council express their fears' over quality of Limerick water

AS householders in Janesboro started their fourth week without a regular water supply, city councillors have expressed fears over the quality and supply to homes in the city.

Inconsistencies in the charges of having a new connection installed were also discussed at yesterday's meeting of the City Council.

"There are a lot of very old lead piping water connections in the city and quite a few of them have leaked over the years. It is inevitable that new connections will have to be provided, I had to do it myself a few years ago," said Cllr Kathleen Leddin.

Cllr Kevin Kiely said that residents on Kenyon Avenue had informed him that they had experienced problems with their water pressure for the last two weeks.

"I would ask that somebody investigate the issue of lead pipes leaking. These houses are owned by Limerick City Council and something should be done about it," said Cllr Kiely.

The Limerick Leader reported last week that six households on Marion Avenue in Janesboro had each been asked for €1,000 by City Council to regain their water supply.

Several of the homes have been left without central heating, running water or working toilets for long periods because of the irregular water supply caused by a leak in their common piping system.

Director of Service Vincent Murray said that Water Services was looking at the water problems very seriously and that the council has a submission with the Department of Environment which asks for funding to replace the old common lead piping systems.
