CONVICTED murderer Kevin Coughlan has been sentenced to five years in prison for falsely imprisoning a man he killed near Limerick city centre more than two years ago.

Last month, Coughlan, 29, of Avondale Drive, Greystones was convicted by a jury of murdering Francis Greene at Steamboat Quay on November 28, 2009.

Coughlan was also convicted of falsely imprisoning Mr Greene on the same date.

The body of the 48-year-old, who was originally from Kilteely, but who was living at Hartstonge Street in the city centre was recovered from the river Shannon at Portdrine, Co Clare in February 2010.

It was the prosecution case that Coughlan had threatened Francis Greene with a knife and forced him to walk from his apartment at Hartstonge Street to Steamboat Quay where he threw him into the water.

In a victim impact statement, which was delivered at the Central Criminal Court yesterday, the family of Francis Greene said they had been “plunged into a nightmare situation” when he was reported missing.

Referring to allegations put forward during the murder trial that Francis Greene had raped Kevin Coughlan’s mother the deceased man’s sister in law, Marie, said his character has been assassinated and that his mother had been “too ashamed to go to mass” afterwards.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy described the claims as “defamatory and untrue”.

He imposed a five year prison sentence which will be served concurrently to the life sentence which was imposed in relation to the murder.

As we all know, it means he got away with the one of the crimes.... = no sentence for that one ... a"free pass".
