Company to pay €90,000 towards road repairs
AIRTRICITY, which is developing a new windfarm in the hills south of Athea, is to contribute €90,000 towards the reinstatement of the Athea to Abbeyfeale road.
The whole reinstatement work will cost more than that, but would not involve a further €90,000, according to Limerick County Council area manager Jimmy Condon.
Speaking at the monthly area meeting of councillors, Cllr Jerome Scanlan complimented Mr Condon and area engineer Ben Noonan for their "negotiating skills" in achieving such a sum from the developers.
Cllr Liam Galvin said that it should have been a condition of planning that windfarm developers be made fully responsible for the reinstatement of roads which would be damaged by heavy traffic associated with the works.
He told the Limerick Leader that he was aware that the present development did not have such a clause, and that another similar development, also in the Athea area, had also already received planning permission, but he said that such a stipulation should be imposed on all further applicants.
Cllr Galvin said that Athea had been badly neglected in terms of roads, and he specifically asked about works on the Knocknaboul road (to Abbeyfeale), and welcomed the news that money was being obtained.
Mr Noonan told him that Knocknaboul will have to close to facilitate work from May 18.
"Good," he said, "because the state of the road is putting Athea people off doing business in Abbeyfeale."
Cllr Galvin said that the further cutback of €5.3m in the roads budget already adopted would greatly affect the council's ability to maintain roads.
