City hairstylist comes out on top
A LIMERICK hairstylist is celebrating her crowning glory after she was chosen as the Irish Hairdresser of the Year.
Amanda Whittome of Melo Yelo is the first hair stylist outside of Dublin to win the title, and she is extremely proud to bring the trophy to Limerick.
However, it is not the first time Amanda has enjoyed success for her upstyles, colours and cuts. She has won eight European medals; she has been crowned European Hairdresser Champion and she won two silver medals at the World Championships.
The Irish Hairdresser of the Year competition took place at the RDS on Sunday last. The Hugh Campbell stylist was one of 550 entrants to participate in the event. The day-long competition was intensive. Amanda took part in six categories including colour, cut, upstyles and bridal.
"It was the best experience of my life so far," she told the Limerick Leader. "I've worked so hard for it, it's great to finally have the trophy in my hands. It's finally mine."
Amanda is originally from the south of England but is now living in Dooradoyle, and says Limerick is one of the best fashion cities in Ireland.
Designer Caroline Mitchell, and Limerick Senior College student Sasha Vasivila provided clothes for Amanda's models, as did local boutiques Tippe Canoe and Virginia's Bridal.
Amanda also credits Limerick make-up artist, Jodie Powell, with helping her secure the title. "She is an amazing freelance make-up artist. We've got so much talent in Limerick. I really feel Limerick is on a par if not better than Dublin."
