Campaigner on tour

JOHN Gill, the Bunratty campaigner who has been a thorn in the side of the legal profession since 2000, has embarked on a caravan tour of Ireland to expose what he describes as the "criminality and corruption" of lawyers and the judiciary.

Mr Gill — whose contributions to the controversial rateyoursolicitor.com website landed him in the High Court last year facing defamation proceedings taken by a Dublin barrister — said there were 10,800 hits on that website and that of the linked Victims of the Legal Profession site the day after the caravan tour hit the road.

The caravan has since been hauled through Ennis, Limerick and Longford and next week it will be pulling up outside Dail Eireann, the Revenue Commissioners, the Department of Finance and the Law Society at Blackhall Place.

Mr Gill says he has been inundated with complaints from around the country since he set up the Victims group. These related to alleged fraud, theft, overcharging, perjury and "downright corruption" and came from "priests, vets, teachers and every walk of life including members of the gardai".

Mr Gill claims the case of Robert Tobin and Michelle Mahon, the Dublin couple who face losing a new house owing to the activities of solicitor Thomas Byrne, is "typical". Mr Byrne is one of the two Dublin solicitors whose practice has been shut down by the Law Society. He owes an estimated 50m to the banks and is being investigated by the Criminal Assets Bureau.

Vowing to keep up his campaign, Mr Gill said: "I'll sort these people out, come hell or high water"
