Bus Eireann axes some Limerick services due to 'low customer support
FOUR local bus routes are to be lost in Limerick as Bus Eireann cuts services with "low customer support."
Two return services to Shannon Airport are to be lost from the city, while route 308, which operates between UL and Caherdavin, will also see a cut. One service from Patrickswell to Shannon will be withdrawn. The company blamed the decision on low customer support, coupled with a need to recover losses.
In a statement, the company said: "The economic downturn has seen a significant drop in demand for public transport because of the fall in the number of people at work, the drop in the number of non-Irish nationals in the country, the significant slowdown in retailing and a substantial reduction in the number of tourists visiting Ireland.
"This has resulted in Bus Eireann customer numbers falling by over 10 per cent in 2009, which has impacted negatively on the company's revenues and means it can no longer afford to operate the same high level of services as it has previously given the funding available to it."
The services affected are:
* The 16.30 route 343 Limerick to Shannon Airport, and the return journey at 17.30
* The 19.30 route 343 Limerick to Shannon Airport service, and the return journey at 20.20
* The 06.55 Patrickswell to Shannon service
* The 16.10 route 308 service from UL to Caherdavin during the college term.
