'Bogus' letters smear Kiely
GARDAI are investigating attempts to damage Fine Gael's Cllr Kevin Kiely and derail his campaign to become a Mayor of Limerick next month, after two suspect letters were sent to the Limerick Leader criticising his recent remarks on speeding and called for his resignation.
One was on Limerick City Council headed paper and the official it was allegedly from denies writing it.
The letters were received by this newspaper after Cllr Kiely called gardai to adopt a "common sense" approach to speeding cases, and criticised their "excessive" presence on the road to Adare during the Irish Open weekend.
Both letters also urged other councillors to exclude him from public office when he runs for Mayor this June, having secured the backing from his party colleagues.
Cllr Kiely has now made an official complaint to the crime office at Henry Street garda station,. However, gardai said that "it hasn't been classified as a criminal matter – or not yet."
A detective sergeant at Henry Street also interviewed staff at this newspaper and took possession of the documents, which will be sent for fingerprint analysis.
Cllr Kiely, a political representative for 23 years and chairman of the joint policing committee in Limerick, said he has also taken the matter up with his solicitor, the city manager and informed his colleagues within Fine Gael.
