Birthday launch for poet O'Grady's new collection
LIMERICK poet Desmond O'Grady's new collection of poems will get a City Hall launch later this month – the day after the acclaimed poet celebrates his 74th birthday.
My Limerick Town, which contains new and celebrated material by the Limerick poet, will be launched in Istabraq Hall by Deputy Mayor Cllr Tom Shortt next Friday. Mr O'Grady will autograph copies of the new book at the launch.
And that Saturday, August 29, the Belltable Theatre, at its temporary Cecil Street home, will host a presentation of Mr O'Grady's poetry with actor Myles Breen. During the Limerick International Poetry festival, Myles, with his Bottom Dog Theatre Company, performed a selection of Mr O'Grady's poetry in the former Jesuit Church.
Now he will take to the stage of the Belltable in Cecil Street alongside Liam O'Brien, Meave Ryan and Frank Carlin – with a special appearance from Mr O'Grady.
"Reading the poetry of Desmond O'Grady proved both a challenge and a joy. Many of the poems are inherently dramatic, lending themselves to creating characters and choral speaking. The poet's love of language and Limerick shines through them all. The audience response on the evening was so positive that Barney (Sheehan) and I decided to restage it in the more intimate setting of the Belltable@36 Cecil Street," Myles explained.
Mr Sheehan said that launching My Limerick Town in City Hall represented one of the high points of his life.
"I am proud and extremely happy with the people who worked around me to get this book into its present condition. It was an enormous challenge. The launching of the book by the deputy Mayor of limerick in the environs of City Hall is naturally the most gratifying feature of the whole matter. It is singularly the most important event of my time in Limerick," he said.
He added that the launch had an open invitation to anybody interested in poetyr and literature.
Admission to Myles Breen's production of Mr Grady's poetry at the Belltable at 36 Cecil Street is €12, with €10 for concessions. For more information, contact the Belltable Arts Centre in 061-319866.
