'Bigger and bolder' gay festival for Limerick city
RAINBOW flags will be flying high in Limerick again next month to promote inclusiveness and equality in the city, during the annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life.
This year, an even "bigger and bolder" parade is being planned through the city streets, with the week long event running from September 5 to 11.
Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Maria Byrne, said Limerick Pride has taken "an important place in our city and we cherish the many diverse communities living here."
The organisers have said Limerick Pride 2010 is the highlight of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender calendar in the south-west area and they intend to have the voice of Limerick' community heard by as many people as possible this year.
"The message of Limerick Pride since its conception has been to spread the message of Equality, Love, Celebration & Diversity," said one of the organisers.
And of course the highlight of the week will be the annual Pride Parade. The parade starts at 1pm on Saturday, September 11 from City Hall, Merchants Quay, on to O'Connell Street, down Henry Street and will finish at City Hall.
A post-parade "Block Party" has been organised for Bank Place, Charlotte Quay, in conjunction with Trinity Rooms
It will be hosted by the former Alternative Miss Limerick "Celine", who promises to add some glitz, glamour and a few surprises to the event.
The party will feature local artists and acts and will include the traditional "Tea Dance" hosted by actor Myles Breen.
A women's night will be held on Thursday, September 9 at 9pm in The Bailey, and the Mr Gay Limerick pageant will be held on the same night and hosted by Madonna Lucia at 31 Thomas Street.
Niamh Kavanagh, of Eurovision fame, will be singing in Dolan's Warehouse during their La Boutique night on Saturday, September 11.
Running from September 7 to 11, the Loft venue above the Locke bar will host a piece of dramatic theatre that week.
Bottom Dog and Musical Theatre West will present 'Elegies For Angels Punks and Raging Queens, which comprises of poems and songs reflecting the lives of people who have lived with and died from AIDS.
Limerick Pride has launched a new website - www.limerickpride.ie - where all the latest news, events and fundraising events are posted.
