Big crowd attends unveiling of murdered Shane's Garryowen rugby jersey
FORMER aeronautical colleagues of murdered Shane Geoghegan unveiled a framed Garryowen jersey on the occasion of his 30th birthday at Air Atlanta Aero Engineering in Shannon this week.
The measure of the high esteem in which Shane was held by his colleagues was evident by the huge turnout at the unveiling of his rugby jersey, according to Air Atlanta CEO William McGonagle.
Mr McGonagle said the Limerick man's murder had a major impact on his colleagues who wanted to commemorate Shane at their workplace by remembering him for the sport that he loved.
It is over a year since the rugby player was shot dead in Dooradoyle in a case of mistaken identity. The needless killing sent shockwaves across Limerick and Shannon, and led to an outpouring of grief.
Shane's girlfriend, Jenna Barry, who presented the jersey to Air Atlanta a number of months ago, attended the event on Monday.
Also present was Shane's cousin, Laura Maye, who said she could see why Shane loved working at Air Atlanta.
"His colleagues wanted to mark Shane's memory and have something that would remind them of him in the workplace," she told the Limerick Chronicle, "and it was very fitting that the jersey was presented to them. They saw fit to frame it and they wanted to formalise that yesterday and of course, on the occasion of his birthday, what better time to do it.
"They would have been out celebrating his 30th birthday with him, so this was their tribute to them," she said.
Upon seeing the hangar where Shane worked, Ms Maye said "it looked like he would have been right at home there".
"He would have really enjoyed himself working there, and I know he did."
She said Shane's family have "good days and bad days as you can expect" since his death in November 2008.
"He is a huge loss to all of us but we are trying to create something positive with the Shane Geoghegan Trust and to do something positive for Shane.
The trust was established to provide children with an alternative to criminal or anti-social behaviour by making a range of sporting and cultural activities available to them.
Air Atlanta is a supporter of the Shane Geoghegan Trust.
