Big development proposed for county village

THE population of Ballyneety is set to double after a planning application was lodged with Limerick County Council for a massive housing development in the village

The planning notice was posted late last week just outside the village. It proposes the construction of 146 residential units in a field behind Cross' Funeral Home on the road between Ballyneety and Caherconlish.

"I was surprised to hear about the proposal and it's something the planning department certainly won't be rushing through," said local Cllr Eddie Wade.

The proposed units would comprise of 60 four bedroomed houses, along with 12 three bedroomed terraced units and 74 three bedroomed semi-detached units.

Also proposed is the construction of an ancillary creche on the site, as well as 16 retail commercial units, the provision of an on-site waste water pumping station and connection to the existing Limerick main drainage pumping station at Crossagalla. The notice also requests permission for 10 serviced residential sites.

Cllr Wade said that, because of Ballyneety's already rapidly rising population, a development such as the one proposed would have to be treated with extreme caution.

"I'm very concerned with towns and villages in County Limerick expanding at too fast a rate without the proper infrastructure in place. We're going to have to take a serious look at the potential drawbacks and benefits for the area that would come with such a huge development.
