Away in a manger: Croom switches on its Christmas lights

SANTA Claus was the guest of honour at the official switching on of the Christmas lights in Croom last Saturday evening.

Around 200 people – many of whom were dressed in festive costumes – gathered at the community hall in advance of a torch parade to the village square where a giant Christmas tree was erected.

Members of the local beavers and scouts represented the figures in the crib and members of Foroige Youth in Action Project led the crowds in carol singing.

Fr Joe Kennedy, PP, blessed the Christmas lights and tree and spoke at the crib where he outlined the role that each of the figures played in Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus.

There was delight and excitement when Santa Claus took a break from his preparations to perform the official switching on of the lights. During his brief visit, he said he hoped all the girls and boys were very good and said he would be visiting Croom early on Christmas Eve.

To mark the switching on of the lights, many of the local traders had special offers from mini-makeovers to discounts and instore promotions.

Elaine Butler of Croom Development Association said: "This year it was our aim to encourage as many people as possible to shop locally for Christmas, and we are delighted that the traders joined in the festivities."

Those who attended the ceremony enjoyed festive treats, including mulled wine, mince pies, hot chocolate and sweets.
