Askeaton enjoys its French connection
THERE'S at least half-a-chance they could be the next U2 - but by the time the Limerick Leader arrived in Colaiste Mhuire, Askeaton last Friday, the five-student band that is "Stryke" had come off-stage.
However, the five, Dan Madden, James Preston, Gearoid Buckley, Stephen Carrig and Danny Neville, left a deep impression on their audience - made up of first and second year students at the school and a group of 55 visiting French students and their teachers - all of whom cheered them to the rafters of the gym-hall.
It was a noisy, cheerful affair, this one-day visit by pupils from Montbron in South West France, the town that officially twinned with Askeaton last year.
"In a way, it is a taster and we are hoping we can organise a full student-exchange in the future," Theresa O'Donovan-Smith, PRO for the Parents Association explained.
Already, the links between both towns are strong - being built enthusiastically by Askeaton-born Maurice O'Mahony on the French side and by a twinning committee headed up by Noelle Dalton on the home side.
And when the twinning committee from Montbron visited Askeaton last year, Colaiste Mhuire played its part - welcoming them on their arrival with a feast of home-grown entertainment as well as a gala fashion show organised by the Parents' Council.
These links were built on last Friday when Colaiste Mhuire students pulled out all the stops to ensure their French counterparts enjoyed their visit.
Apart from Stryke, there were other young musicians from the school on hand to entertain them - Gearoid McCarthy demonstrated his musical excellence while the school's traditional band also earned a spot in the limelight.
A lively session of ceili dancing had both sets of students mingling happily and young voices enthusiastically roared at demonstrations of hurling and wellie-throwing. It was all good fun - followed by a lunch, hosted by the Askeaton Twinning Committee and the Parents Association before the French students headed off on a tour of the town and its Abbey and Castle and a taste of Adare before heading back to Connemara.
The one-day taster will almost certainly lead to a demand for more.
