Area councils will grease the wheels for our volunteers
OVER 100 community groups and voluntary organisations from the Adare/Rathkeale area are expected to come together next week to set up a local area council which will act as a platform and voice for voluntary activity.
The meeting has been called by West Limerick Resources which is spearheading the setting-up of five local area councils in West Limerick.
The idea behind the councils is to ensure a more rapid two-way flow of information, Mary Quaid from Croagh, who is the voluntary chairwoman of West Limerick Resources, explained to the Limerick Leader.
West Limerick Resources will channel information about its many programmes, projects and funding schemes to the area councils and through them, hope to reach deeper into every voluntary organisation in West Limerick.
But, according to Ms Quaid, the voluntary organisations and community groups are also the people who know best about what is needed in their own area and will be able to identify priorities and pass that information back to the board of West Limerick Resources.
Each council will be made up of two elected representatives from each of the parishes within its area.
But in electing its two representatives, all the community groups and/or voluntary organisations in that parish will have a vote.
"The hope is that parishes will elect a person who they know will stay in contact with them, who will be interested in the wider community and not just in their own organisation," Ms Quaid said.
Each area council will meet twice a year - but each member will also be a contact person for information from West Limerick Resources in between times.
It will then be their job to pass on that information to the group or people in their community who may benefit from it. Each of the five voluntary sector directors on the board will also stay in close contact with the area council in his or her area.
The Adare Area Council covers Adare, Ballingarry, Cappagh, Kilcolman, Coolcappagh, Croagh, Kilfinny, Rathkeale, Mungret, Crecora, Ballycummin, Patrickswell, Ballybrown and Clarina. At the meeting, nominations from each of these 14 areas will be sought - and each area will vote for its own two representatives.
All the voluntary groups or organisations already registered on the West Limerick Resources database have been invited to attend, but if you aren't on that database and your group or organisation has not been invited, you should check with Eimear at West Limerick Resources on 069-62222.
