Appeal for more gardai after killer is shot at in Limerick city

THE chairman of the city's Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Michael Hourigan, has called on the Government to deploy additional garda resources in Limerick.

This follows the attempted murder of convicted killer Paul Coffey at the weekend.

The 32-year-old, who is originally from Moyross, was shot at by a lone gunman as he walked in the Michael Street area of the city at around 9.30 on Sunday night.

Coffey escaped injury and the gunman fled the scene in a 1984 registered Toyota Corolla car. "I am concerned about what's happening on the streets of Limerick and I have raised this with our new chief superintendent and we do need to have a greater garda presence in the city centre," said Cllr Hourigan.

"These people need to be rooted out of our society because what they are doing is affecting both the commercial life and the social life of the city," added the former Mayor.

Paul Coffey was jailed in 2003 after he admitted driving the getaway car following the murder of Eddie Ryan at the Moose Bar in November 2000. That murder was the first killing in the decade-long Limerick feud and Coffey is the only person to have been charged in connection with the killing.

He pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Eddie Ryan in 2003 and he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with seven years suspended. He was released in January of this year.

Officially gardai are keeping an open mind in relation to Sunday night's shooting, however sources close to the investigation have told the Limerick Chronicle they believe it was an attempted gangland hit, which may be linked to the murder of Eddie Ryan.

Gardai are also investigating if the shooting is linked to the recent release from prison of a number of criminals who have links to the Dundon McCarthy gang.

Gardai at Henry Street are investigating and can be contacted at (061) 212400.
