Anger in Dail over no cash payments to Limerick flood victims
THE Government will be guilty of "obvious discrimination" if it does not allocate any potential EU disaster relief funding to the victims of last year's Newcastle West floods, Limerick West TD Dan Neville has warned.
Following some of the worst national flooding on record this week, the Government are exploring the possibility of applying to the EU for emergency funding for those areas that have been worst affected.
However elected representatives in West Limerick have said that if this money does become available, resources will have to be allocated to flood victims in Newcastle West who are "still suffering" after the River Arra infamously burst its banks in August 2008.
"€40 million of damage was inflicted on 200 premises, including homes and businesses, in Newcastle West last year and that is still affecting people today. It hasn't gone away," said Deputy Neville, who raised the issue in the Dail on Tuesday.
Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin confirmed this
week that a special fund of €10 million will be made available to flood victims in areas such as Cork, Galway and Clare.
Deputy Niall Collins said that Newcastle West flood victims should be entitled to any Government or EU funding that becomes available.
