INVESTIGATIONS are continuing following a significant drugs seizure on the outskirts of the city earlier today.

Five kilogrammes of cannabis herb were recovered during searches of a field at Cloughnadromin, Ballysimon at around 11am today.

The drugs, which have an estimated street value of €100,000, were seized as part of an intelligence-led operation involving members of the divisional drugs unit.

Detectives from Henry Street and Roxboro Road garda stations assisted in the search operation as did members of the armed Regional Support Unit (RSU).

The search was carried out as part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of illicit drugs in Limerick city centre.

It is understood the cannabis herb, which was concealed in plants and trees, was wrapped in plastic and ready for distribution when it was were discovered.

According to garda sources, an emerging drugs gang is suspected of owning the cannabis. Following the seizure, the field was sealed off and further searches were conducted in the area.

According to investigating gardai, no arrests have been made in connection with the seizure and no other items were seized during the follow-up searches.

A garda spokesman has confirmed the drugs seized during the search operation will be sent to Garda Headquarters in Dublin for forensic analysis.

The seizure of the cannabis is one of the biggest drugs seizures in Limerick this year and represents a blow to the operations of organised criminals in the city.

Gardai at Roxboro Road are investigating the discovery of the drugs.
