AN intelligence-led operation in Limerick has resulted in the seizure of 100,000 cigarettes.

Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service, assisted by Gardai, seized the illegal cigarettes on the Limerick-Tipperary border near Castleconnell this Tuesday lunchtime.

The Jin Ling and Golden Seagies cigarettes had a retail value of €47,000 with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €37,000.

The cigarettes were discovered in unmarked brown boxes when a Ford Transit van was stopped. The male driver, a non-Irish national in his 30s, was arrested and taken for questioning at Nenagh Garda Station.

The van was seized and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

This latest seizure comes on foot of some €10,000 worth of illicit cigarettes being seized from a car on the Cork-Limerick border recently.

Anyone with information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800-295295.
