OVER €80,000 worth of top-of-the range bikes have been stolen from a shop in Kilmallock under the darkness of night.

According to gardai, approximately 70 bikes were taken by thieves from Kilmallock Cycles on the town’s main street sometime between 8pm on Monday and 8am on Tuesday.

The bikes range in price from €1,000 to €3,500.

It is understood that the thieves gained access to the premises through an adjacent tyre shop.

“They forced the door there and went from there in through an internal ceiling between the bicycle shop and the tyre shop,” explained Sergeant Damien Holian of Kilmallock garda station,

“Nearly all the adult bikes were taken. It would have taken a fair amount of time to load them all up.”

The gardai are appealing to anyone who have seen any suspicious activity near the bike shop on Sarsfield Street to contact them.

It is believed that the thieves pulled a van or a truck in at the front or side of the premises.

“It would be unusual to see activity at that time. We have gone through CCTV and there was a good bit of traffic passing so someone might have seen something,” said Sgt Holian.

“They must have had a large van to transport all the bikes. There was at least two individuals involved.”

The majority of the bikes stolen were racing bikes of the brand Giant.

“There were a couple of mountain bikes as well,” said Sgt Holian.

“They are all adult, top-of-the-range bikes. There were one or two very expensive carbon bikes there which are about €3,500 each. They are made of carbon fibre.”
