A WOMAN has admitted killing her son at her home in Charleville 18 months ago.

Diane Ward, aged 43, with an address at Harrison Place, Charleville was due to go on trial at Central Criminal Court in Dublin this morning for the murder of Anthony Ward (8) on September 3, 2012.

However, in advance of the trial, Ms Ward indicated she wished to plead guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

Timothy O’Leary BL, prosecuting, told the court that this plea was acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecution and that the murder charge would not be proceeded with.

Sentencing was adjourned until next Monday when it is expected that psychiatric evidence will be heard.

The body of Anthony Ward was discovered at his home by a relative on the day he had been due to start a new term at school.

Initially, gardai were treating the death as a tragic incident but it later transpired the boy died from asphyxiation.

Ms Ward first appeared before Limerick Court a number of days later.
