GARDAI in Bruff are investigating after a homeowner was confronted by a masked man armed with a shotgun at his home in County Limerick.

The terrifying encounter occurred at the man’s home in Tankardstown, Kilmallock, on the Bruree road, shortly before 7pm on Sunday night.

The armed intruder, who was wearing a balaclava, threatened the homeowner with the shotgun before fleeing the scene empty handed.

Gardaí in Bruff are appealing to anyone with information on the incident or anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the Tankardstown area to contact them on 061 382 940.

There were also reports that couldn’t be confirmed at the time of going to press, that the house of the local parish priest in Kilmallock was broken into during Mass on Saturday evening, and the Church of Ireland at Deebert, Kilmallock was also targeted by thieves.

Cllr Mike Donegan described the recent incidents as “shocking” particularly so close to Christmas.

“It’s frightening to think that intruders can come in like that and carry such weapons and intimidate people,” said Cllr Donegan.

“I think it’s important that people remain very vigilant and look out for each other over the Christmas period with this type of activity taking place,” he added.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, an 18-year-old woman has been charged after a man was stabbed a number of times at a house party in Kilfinane over the weekend.

Kelly-Anne Moran of Main Street, Kilfinane - and originally from Limerick city - appeared before a special sitting of Limerick Court on Sunday night.

Moran is charged with assault causing harm to the man who is aged 24, at Main Street, Kilfinane in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The victim was stabbed a number of times in the back and arm. He was released from hospital over the weekend after receiving treatment.

Moran was released on bail with a number of conditions and is due before the courts again on January 3.
