A BENCH warrant issued for the arrest of a woman who is accused of assaulting a female garda was executed this week - almost 12 years after the alleged offence.

Catherine Coughlan, with an address at Naughton Place, Limerick is accused assaulting Garda Caragh Leahy in the vicinity of her home on July 7, 2002.

On Tuesdsay, Limerick Court was told that a bench warrant for Ms Coughlan’s arrest, which was issued in 2002, was re-issued last year.

Sgt Donal Cronin said there was “some confusion” in relation to the assault charge and he requested the matter be adjourned to June 3, next to allow gardai seek directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Ms Coughlan, who was granted free legal aid, was released on bail on her own bond of €5
