VOTING is underway across Limerick in the local and European elections.

Dozens of polling stations across the city and county opened at 7am and will remain open until 10pm with the votes being counted at the UL Arena from 9am tomorrow.

A total of 86 candidates are seeking election to Limerick city and county council across six different electoral areas - Limerick city east, Limerick city north, Limerick city west, Newcastle West, Cappamore/Kilmallock and Adare/Rathkeale.

Voters are being asked to elect a total of 40 councillors, 21 of whom will represent the newly established Metropolitan area.

Meanwhile, voters in Limerick are also being asked to elect four MEPs to represent the Ireland South constituency in the European Parliament.

A total of 15 candidates, none of whom are Limerick based, are seeking election.

The counting of the European votes will begin at 9am on Sunday at the Neptune stadium in Cork.

The Limerick Leader’s team of reporters and photographers will be providing live coverage of the count from the UL Arena across the weekend on Twitter and at limerickleader.ie.
