A LIMERICK city man has pleaded guilty to possession of more than 87,000 illicit cigarettes and large quantities of fine cut tobacco on which excise duty had not been paid.

Thomas Keane, aged 24, of Delmege Park, Moyross admitted having the cigarettes and tobacco, which were seized at two locations in the city on January 12, 2012.

A total of 10,872 cigarettes of various brands and 1.08kgs of fine cut tobacco were seized at Mr Keane’s home while 76,500 cigarettes and 15.31kgs of tobacco were seized at a house at Verdant Place, King’s Island.

Mr Keane is due to be sentenced in October.
