THE Limerick Institute of Technology has opened applications for a new president, as Dr Maria Hinfelaar reaches the end of her seven year term.

All jobs in the public sector have to be advertised openly, and go through an open competition.

A spokesperson for the college confirmed Dutch national Dr Hinfelaar reaches the end of her contract in August, when the vacancy arises.

Dr Hinfelaar, who joined LIT in 2004, has the option to reapply again for the position.

But the spokesperson said that is a “personal matter” for the current president.

During her time at the Moylish college, Dr Hinfelaar has overseen a major €200m development plan, which will see its campus size double, and it open up new sites in the city centre.

Dr Hinfelaar co-founded the National Franchise Centre in the heart of the city.

LIT was also awarded the award for Institute of Technology of the Year back in 2008, while the college this week will oversee the Irish Technology Leadership Group’s second visit to Limerick.
