It is understood that the victim, who is aged in his early 30s, was threatened with a knife, beaten and robbed of winnings made at a Limerick city casino earlier in the night.

He was driving home on the M20 when his car was rammed off the road near the Dooradoyle exit at approximately 1.30am. He was treated in hospital for his injuries but has since been discharged.

Two men and two women were arrested as part of the investigation on Wednesday.

The men remain in custody at Roxboro garda station this Thursday.

The women were arrested and taken to Henry Street and one has since been released without charge with a file being prepared for the DPP.

Gardai are also examining two cars seized as part of the investigation.
