A DRUG addict was sentenced to nine months in prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of heroin for the purpose of sale or supply at his home on the southside of the city earlier this year.

Limerick District Court was told the drugs, which had a street value of around €330, were seized when gardai searched the home of Stephen Ring at Greenfields Road, Rosbrien on April 21 last.

Insp Jerry Horan told the court the drugs were found hidden in 18 plastic bags, which were concealed in a sock.

Stephen Ring, who is aged 48, has more than 70 previous convictions including a number under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan said Mr Ring had cooperated with gardai “at all times” and she told the court he was “supplying his own friends” with heroin as opposed to selling the drug on the streets.

“He was not making any profit and he has no trappings of wealth,” she told the court.

Judge Eamon O’Brien imposed a nine month sentence.
