A NUMBER of investigations are underway following the death of an inmate at Limerick Prison early this morning.

The alarm was raised at around 4am after the 25-year-old was found to be unresponsive in his cell.

Despite attempts by prison staff and medical personnel to resuscitate the man, he was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is suspected the inmate, who was serving a sentence for manslaughter, died from a drugs overdose.

However, post-mortem will be carried out on his body to confirm cause of death.

Gardaí, the Irish Prison Service and the Inspector of Prisons are all investigating the circumstances of the man’s death.
