GARDAI are investigating the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl in Charleville at the weekend.

The incident is alleged to have occurred in Rathgoggin Middle, Charleville in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It is understood that the girl was walking home on her own after attending a birthday party in the town when the alleged incident occurred.

“For a young person of that age, it was an horrific ordeal to be put through.

“She was on the way home from the town – it was between 2am and 3am,” said Superintendent Pat McCarthy of Mallow garda station.

It is also understood that the teenager was physically assaulted during the attack which is alleged to have occurred on open ground off a housing estate. No arrests have been made.

“We are interviewing people and we are seeking witnesses to come forward. We have a number of statements taken. It is being actively investigated,” added Supt McCarthy. The alarm was raised by relatives of the girl who received treatment at the Sexual Assault Unit in Cork.
