RETAILERS are being warned to be vigilant following the detection of a number of forged €50 notes in the city recently.

According to gardai at least one premises has been targeted in recent weeks.

One note was successfully tendered at a cafe on Mallow Street on March 19, last and a second unsuccessful attempt was made a short time later at the same cafe.

“The culprits were both in their mid to late 20’s and it is likely that these forged notes will be tendered in other shops and businesses in the coming weeks, so we are advising retailers to be on the alert and staff should be similarly advised to keep an eye out for the forged notes,” said crime prevention officer, Sgt Brian Broderick.

The forged notes can be detected by the use of ultra violet lights or pens.
