Cian Prendiville says he cannot accept Joe Crowley's explanation
SOCIALIST party representative Cian Prendiville accused Fianna Fail of “scraping the bottom of the barrel” to win votes in next year’s election.

SOCIALIST party representative Cian Prendiville accused Fianna Fail of “scraping the bottom of the barrel” to win votes in next year’s election.

It comes after local Fianna Fail activist Joe Crowley - who will stand on the northside next summer - said he believes groups of Chinese fishermen are snaring ducks from the Westfields Wetlands.

Asked what for, he said: “Crispy duck in the Chinese restaurant tonight”.

After the comments caused a national furore, Mr Crowley acceded to calls for an apology, saying he made an honest mistake.

But Mr Prendiville does not believe this is the case.

He said: “Mr Crowley has attempted to portray this whole incident as simply a stupid mistake, a slip of the tongue by him. But [he] is not some amateur. He is a well experienced Fianna Fail spin doctor, having worked for Willie O’Dea in the past.”

Mr Prendiville, who will run directly in competition with Mr Crowley next year, added: “[He] was, in my opinion, trying to play in to prejudices. That is even before we consider the disgusting ‘joke’ about crispy duck he followed it up with.”

“It appears Fianna Fail are already scrapping the bottom of the barrel to try to win some votes next year. Together with Councillor Sheehan’s recent playing of the race card, it is clear Fianna Fail are desperate to try to distract ordinary people from the key issues that face them: austerity, driving down the living standards of working class people of all ethnicities in order to make the rich richer,” Mr Prendiville argued.

Mr Prendiville also jokingly pointed out that a decline in snails this summer in Limerick is not due to people eating them.

“To save Mr Crowley from further embarrassment, he should be aware that the recent decline in the amount of snails is a result of the very hot summer, which causes them to burrow under ground, rather than anyone sneaking into his garden to scavenge for dinner,” he said.

Migrant workers group Doras Luimni denounced Mr Crowley’s comments as racist, and called on him to apologise in the wake of the initial reports.
