A MAN is being questioned by gardai after an employee at a city centre department store was attacked earlier today.

A MAN is being questioned by gardai after an employee at a city centre department store was attacked earlier today.

The incident happened shortly before midday when the man was refused a refund at the Michael Guiney’s store on William Street.

According to other customers, who witnessed the incident, the man lashed out at the employee and struck her with what is believed to have been a chain.

“It was a vicious assault with a weapon - a chain,” said Alison Godfrey, general manager of the store, which is located at the former William Street Mall.

The female employee was “shaken” by her ordeal but it is understood she was not physically imjured.

A garda spokesperson confirmed that a man is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act after he was arested in connection with the incident.

“Our investigations are continuing and I can confirm that a man is in custody” said a spokesperson.
