PROSECUTIONS are likely to be brought following the seizure of more than 20,000 illegal cigarettes in County Limerick.

A total of 22,000 cigarettes, with a retail value of around €10,300, were seized by Customs officers during a planned operation on the Limerick/Cork border yesterday.

Two steel containers, each concealing over 11,000 ‘Septwolf’ branded cigarettes, were discovered when a vehicle was stopped and searched as part of Operation Lair. Two Chinese nationals were questioned about the cigarettes and the car was also seized.

As part of the same operation, officers executed a search warrant at a private residence in Limerick city.

A number of Chinese nationals were questioned at the house and items including mobile phones, tablet pc, and documentation were seized.

A Revenue spokespersonsaid the investigation is ongoing with a view to prosecution.

The cigarattes seized yesterday, represented a potential loss of €8,100 to the exchequer.
