A FIRE that broke out at an apartment in Limerick city centre has been brought under control and the cause is now being investigated by gardai.

The fire, at an apartment on Catherine Street in the city, broke out earlier this Monday evening.

Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the blaze around 7pm and, on arrival, firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and extinguished the fire on the top floor.

Extensive damage was caused to the property but there were no injuries reported. HSE paramedics were also in attendance.

The building is next door to an apartment that was also extensively damaged in a recent fire before Christmas.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by gardai.
