A YOUNG man viciously beat his partner with a baseball bat in front of their young child after he discovered a photograph of her with five time world snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan.

The 21-year-old has pleaded guilty to several charges relating to an incident at their home near the city centre on March 1, last. During a sentencing hearing, Garda Dermot Cummins said gardai were alerted at around 8.40pm and that when they arrived, the woman complained she had been subjected to a prolonged assault..

Limerick Circuit Court was told the defendant had become angry and irate when he discovered a photograph of his partner with the snooker star. “He accused her of being unfaithful and he pulled her hair and punched her face,” said Garda Cummins who said the photograph had been taken during an exhibition event in Limerick.

The man struck the woman so hard with a baseball bat it broke and the woman also sustained a laceration when he held a pizza knife to her stomach.

In addition to assaulting the woman, the man also locked her inside the house when he left for a short time prior to the gardai being alerted.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said she believed she was going to die and that she still has nightmares and no longer socialises.

Following his arrest, the defendant told gardai he had consumed around 20 Xanax tablets and could not remember what happened.

Anthony Sammon SC said his client is disgusted by his actions and recognises that he needs help.

Adjourning the matter to February, Judge Tom O’Donnell said no human being should have to be exposed to the type of behaviour which was outlined to the court.

He requested that a probation report be prepared.
