GARDAI are investigating an incident during which missiles were thrown at firefighters who were attending a fire in St Mary’s Park.

Members of Limerick Fire and Rescue Service were deployed at around 8pm on Tuesday after the alarm was raised in relation to a rubbish fire at St Munchin’s Street.

It is understood the rubbish, which was located at the base of a CCTV camera pole was deliberately set on fire by a number of youths who had gathered in the area.

While the fire was extinguished quickly, a number of missiles, including rocks and stones, were thrown at firefighters and appliances while they were at the scene.

While nobody was injured, some damage was caused to one fire engine.

Gardai were immediately alerted and an investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, members of the fire service were deployed to the same location around an hour later after another fire was started.
