DESMOND Hayes will remain a candidate for Renua Ireland in Limerick in the upcoming general election for the time being, a party spokesperson has said.

The North Circular Road accountant is under investigation by the party’s ethics officer Karl Deeter after he was named on Revenue’s defaulters list last week.

He was fined €1,250 for not filing his tax returns on time, and shortly after the list was made public, he confirmed he had voluntarily referred the case on.

A spokesman for the party confirmed he would continue to represent the Lucinda Creighton-led party in the Limerick City constituency.

“There is an internal review under our ethics officer Karl Deeter. Essentially, unless further details emerge, this is where the matter lies. Mr Hayes is working with the Revenue on his own personal affairs too,” said the spokesperson.

“It is an ongoing matter which has not reached a full resolution at this time.”

It is not clear when the results of Mr Deeter’s investigation will be concluded or if they will be made available to the public.
