THREE men arrested in Limerick and suspected of being involved in dissident republican activity are to appear before the Special Criminal Court this morning.

THREE men arrested in Limerick and suspected of being involved in dissident republican activity are to appear before the Special Criminal Court this morning.

The men, aged in their mid 20s to late 30s, were arrested in Rathleake in the early hours of Saturday morning. Gardai attached to the Special Detective Unit assisted by members of the Emergency Response Unit stopped and searched two cars - one of which was believed to be stolen - at Kyletaun, Rathkeale shortly before 2am on Saturday morning.

During the course of the search of the car, a firearm and ammunition were discovered, seized and sent for forensic and ballistic testing.

It is understood the men are suspected members of the Real IRA. They were held at Henry Street garda station in the city under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

The men are due to appear before the Special Criminal Court, Criminal Courts of Justice, this morning.
