Generally it is the woman who is most stressed during a pregnancy but in this instance the partner resorted to smoking cannabis to relieve the tension, heard Kilmallock Court.

Ray Cosgrave, aged 26, of Moymore, Pallasgreen pleaded guilty to possession of drugs.

Garda Bill Collins, stationed in Cappamore, said while he was on patrol in Garanemore, Pallasgreen on February 12 he found the defendant acting suspiciously.

“I searched him under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found a quantity of cannabis herb. He said it was for his own use and was apologetic,” said Garda Collins.

Laurence Goucher BL, who represented Cosgrave, said his client is a 26-year-old man who is in a long-term relationship with his partner. The barrister said the couple were expecting a baby in the next seven to 10 days.

“He found the pregnancy stressful and used cannabis to relieve the stress. He has told me he won’t touch the stuff again.

“This frightened the life out of him. It is his first offence and was a very stupid thing to do,” said Mr Goucher.

Judge Marian O’Leary ordered Cosgrave to pay €200 to the court poor box. She asked him how long he needed to pay it and he said one month.

“Christmas is coming so I will give you until February. If paid I will strike it out,” said Judge O’Leary.
