REVENUE Officers have seized cash and cigarettes following an operation in Limerick city.

Revenue along with gardai seized €6,750 in cash and 10,000 cigarettes with a retail value of over €5,250 - representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €4,100 - on Tuesday as part of an intelligence-led operation. A vehicle was also seized.

The ‘M&J’ cigarettes and cash were discovered when a car was stopped and searched by officers.

The cash was detained in accordance with the proceeds of crime legislation and a three-month detention order was granted at Limerick District Court to facilitate further investigations. An Irish national in his sixties was questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes in the shadow economy.
