THREE men who were arrested in Rathkeale in the early hours of yesterday in connection with dissident republican activity remain in custody today.

THREE men who were arrested in Rathkeale in the early hours of yesterday in connection with dissident republican activity remain in custody today.

Gardai attached to the Special Detective Unit assisted by members of the Emergency Response Unit stopped and searched two cars - one of which is believed to be stolen - at Kyletaun, Rathkeale shortly before 2am on Saturday morning.

During the course of the search of the car, a firearm and ammunition were discovered, seized and sent for forensic and ballistic testing.

It is understood the men are suspected members of the Real IRA.

Aged in their mid-20s to late 30s, the man are being held at Henry Street garda station in the city under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

They can be held for a maximum of 72 hours before being charged or released.
