CUSTOMS officers have recovered a significant quantity of illegal cigarettes at Shannon Airport for the second time in a week.

CUSTOMS officers have recovered a significant quantity of illegal cigarettes at Shannon Airport for the second time in a week.

In a targeted operation, 70,000 cigarettes with a retail value of €33,600 were seized at the airport yesterday.

According to a Revenue spokesperson, the “Sept Wolves” cigarettes were concealed in a shipment of electrical goods which had arrived via airfreight from China.

The seizure follows a separate seizure last week when a similar quantity of cigarattes were recovered.

Again these were concealed in airfreight which had arrived from China.

Investigations are contining following both seizures, which represent a combined potential loss of almost €60,000 to the exchequer.
