A FIREARM, explosive materials and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been uncovered in woods just outside Limerick city.

As part of an ongoing investigation into the activities of dissident Republicans, Gardai from Limerick carried out a search operation at Glenagross Woods in Meelick Meelick on Friday night after a man out walking his dog made the discovery.

Gardai seized a large quantity of ammunition along with a number of firearms, explosive components and documentation during the search of the wooded area.

The Army EOD team were called and declared the area safe before a examination of the scene was carried out.

The items seized have since been removed for forensic and technical examination.
