A 21-year-old woman has drowned after getting into difficulty swimming in a river near the West Limerick town of Abbeyfeale in the early hours of this Wednesday morning.

The woman’s body was pulled from the River Feale shortly after 1am this morning. She is understood to have gone swimming in the river after midnight, but the alarm was raised a short time later by a number of her companions after she went missing.

Gardai, emergency services and members of the Abbeyfeale Search and Rescue attended the scene and the victim’s remains were found approximately 40 minutes after she got into difficulty. CPR was performed on the victim, but attempts to revive her failed and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A garda spokesperson said that the victim’s name will not be released until all family members have been notified.
