The man, whose aged in his sixties, sustained serious head injuries during the incident and remains in hospital.

He was discovered by a passerby lying in an unconscious state on a green area at Kennedy Park at around 6am on Wednesday.

Detectives investigating the incident arrested a man in his 20’s in the Castletroy area on Wednesday night.

He was questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act before being released without charge late last night.

An incident room has been established at Roxboro Road garda station and anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact them at (061) 214340.

Separately, a man is in custody at Henry Street garda station this morning following a robbery incident in the Cecil Street area last night.
