OUTGOING councillor, Fine Gael’s Mary Jackman has described Fianna Fail’s Shane Clifford’s performance in City East as “unbelievable”.
With 11.4% the tallies showed that Mr Clifford was second only to the all conquering Sinn Fein’s Seighin O Ceallaigh on 14%.
The first time candidates from Castleconnell said he and his team ran a very positive campaign.
“We went out, we met people, we knocked on every door, we didn’t meet everybody but we tried to. We went around some areas three time in an effort to meet everybody. I wanted to have the opportunity to listen to what people had to say whether they had any intention of voting for me or not,” said Mr Clifford.
While not yet elected he said it is “looking fairly OK” with a smile.
The son of the former Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, John Clifford, says he expected to do very well from what he has been hearing on the doorsteps.
The big success stories, thus far, have been the resurgence of Fianna Fail and emergence of Sinn Fein as a real alternative.
“A lot ot of people said they have never voted for Fianna Fail before but they voted for me this time. When we were doing the tallies out of the Castleconnell, Ahane, Lisnagry, Montpelier where I was getting a number 1 and Fine Gael candidates were getting number 2s. These are local elections, it is all about the community and people wanted local representation.
“They felt with the new city and county council they didn’t want to be left out on a limb. They were worried about the city council being far away and they wanted somebody local.
“I definitely got a cross party vote in my local area and I was very happy to pick up votes in most boxes across from the area,” said Mr Clifford, soon to be Cllr Clifford.
