A LIMERICK city man is due to be sentenced later today for the manslaughter of his father almost two years ago.

Last month, Gerard McNamara, aged 24, of Cedar Court, Kennedy Park pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his father on October 1, 2010.

Forty-eight-year-old Joseph ‘Joey’ O’Donnell (pictured), who was a well-known boxer and soccer player, died a number of hours after he was attacked by his son during a drunken row at his home at Hyde Road, Prospect.

During a sentencing hearing last week, the Central Criminal Court was told he defendant knocked his father to the ground and kicked him when a row erupted between the pair.

Both men had been drinking together for several hours before the fight broke out.

Mr Justice Paul Carney is due to impose sentence today.
