TWO men have been arrested after gardai seized a large amount of cocaine, a handgun and ammunition in Limerick city this morning.

TWO men have been arrested after gardai seized a large amount of cocaine, a handgun and ammunition in Limerick city this morning.

The pair, who are aged 26 and 37, were detained following planned searches of six houses, sheds and other out buildings in the Lower Gerald Griffin Street area at approximately 8.30am this morning.

The searches are understood to be linked to investigations into a major criminal drugs operation in the city.

A large quantity of cocaine, a hand gun, ammunition and cash were seized during the operation, which was carried out by members of local the armed support unit, officers from the Limerick divisional drugs squad, and gardai from Henry Street and Mayorstone garda stations.

The men are currently being detained at Henry Street garda station under Section 50 of the Offences Against the State Act.
